Cynthia Clawson

Cynthia Clawson

Concert and recording artist

  • Recipient, five Dove Awards and a Grammy
  • "The most awesome voice in gospel music" -- Billboard magazine

She was three years old when her father first asked her to sing in the small church where he was pastor, and she has not stopped singing. Cynthia graduated from college with a major in Vocal Performance and a minor in Piano. After winning the Arthur Godfrey Talent Show her senior year in college, she was spotted by a CBS television producer who signed her to do a summer replacement show for Carol Burnett. That show led her to a recording contract with record producer Buryl Red.

She sang everywhere she was asked to sing: from neighboring local churches to audiences around the world. Her journey has found her singing in settings as varied as a Billy Graham Crusade to singing for Carla Faye Tucker on Death Row in Texas. She has sung in such divergent geographic sites as Wembly Stadium in England, to the small, 300-year-old Spanish Mission San Jose in San Antonio, Texas. It was at the Mission San Jose that she made a stunning recording/video, Prayer and Plainsong. This music is sung a cappella and seems to exemplify the kind of daring creativity that her listeners have come to expect.

Cynthia was called by Billboard Magazine "The most awesome voice in Gospel Music." She has won the Grammy and Dove Awards for her work. She has also been given an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from Houston Baptist University. With 22 albums to her credit, she has proven to be a singer difficult to categorize because she is a consummate stylist. She also sang the title song for the Academy Award winning movie, "The Trip to Bountiful."

The common denominators in her music are her faith and musicianship. She has obediently dedicated herself to sing the gospel wherever she is asked. Cynthia is a frequent guest on Robert Schuller's "Hour of Power." She is delighted to be involved with Bill Gaither's remarkable experience of recording and televising the gospel music of the deep south. Her dedication to excellence has been recognized by friends in the Gospel Music industry such as Vestal Goodman who calls Cynthia "a singer's singer."

Cynthia continues her recording and concertizing that has given her a unique musical career. In addition to that aspect of her life, she also spends her time as wife to Ragan Courtney, who is pastor of Tarrytown Baptist Church in Austin, Texas. Cynthia and Ragan have two grown children, Will and Lily. As an artist who is Christian, she is happily involved in sharing her faith and her music.
