Robert Benson

Robert Benson writes, reads, keeps house, and says his prayers at his home in Hermitage, Tennessee. He can be persuaded to leave home to lead retreats on prayer and vocation, speak at conferences, go to baseball games and bookstores, and eat Italian food.

Robert is an alumni of the Academy for Spiritual Formation (United Methodist Church), he is also a member of the Friends of Silence and of the Poor, an ecumenical order of lay people.

In writing Robert asks profound questions and buoys his writing with a self-deprecating sense of humor and immense trust in God. He makes the ordinary events of life seem mystical and the mystical seem ordinary. He illustrates the full power of prayer, illuminates the reasons we are drawn to pray, and bears witness to the grace of leading a life attuned to the voice of God.

Benson's book, Between the Dreaming and the Coming True, drew favorable comparisons to the work of one of his mentors: Frederick Buechner.

In his newest book, due to be released April 2004, A Good Life: Benedict's Guide To Everday Joy, he explores what makes a "good life" in today's fast-paced, competitive world. He explores the wisdom of Benedict, a 6th century monk, who used compassion and practical living to create a rule of life which included--balancing prayer, rest, community, and work--that has helped centuries of people lead more fulfilling lives.
